New Nitwit?

June 8, 2008 by Rusty

Have I just discovered a new Nitwit?  The guy drops in out of nowhere to leave a comment on a topic that’s a couple of months old.  It’s comment #25.  Of course, the guy claims to admire Philbin’s work.  Bukkakeworld must have one fan.  I wonder if Philbin hates this particular reader.

I guess all publicity is good publicity. Thanks for thinking of me ;)

At any rate, it’s clear your definition of a nitwit is someone who challenges you or with whom you don’t have total agreement.

Ooh, my Google hits just went up! I guess I’m not such a nitwit after all.

  2. on June 8, 2008 at 6:34 pm Sphinx

Um, no. All publicity is NOT good publicity. Unless of course you’re James Frey, and that guy either has a deal with Satan or his own set of physics.

And of COURSE the definition of nitwit is up to our collective whim! You came here of your own volition and are thus subject to majority rule.

  3. on June 8, 2008 at 6:57 pm Tony

Most of the pros have been snickering behind Adam’s back since he first popped up on Shocklines, proudly proclaiming that he was publishing Philbin and Dagstine. His posts are mostly ignored. Looks like this is yet another case of Philbin getting someone else to fight his battles, something he has a long history of doing.

  4. on June 8, 2008 at 7:10 pm Rusty

Philbin does have a habit of doing that. In his case, it sometimes seems to work. Pacione, on the other hand, always fails when he attempts to mimic the technique.

I failed to make the SL connection, but come to think of it, that’s probably why Adam’s name sounded vaguely familiar. I also remember one of Dagstine’s entries about an acceptance in Polluto, now that you mention it, Tony.

  5. on June 8, 2008 at 7:11 pm JerrodBalzer

Well, I just googled you, Adam, and if you think your business is booming because you got another hit or view, then yep, you’re a nitwit.

And a hypocrite, too. So if Janrae thought the award was for “gay” fiction (they exist so why is it so homophobic to mention it?) and was mistaken, just say she’s mistaken. The fact that you went on your own blog and called her homophobic makes you far worse than getting an award wrong. That’s a high charge.

From what I gathered, she was saying that if Philbin or Daggy were to submit their work for a gay award, it would make her wonder if they were gay. The point of this is that they’re buddy-buddy with an extremely outspoken homophobe, Nickolaus Pacione.

Do you get it, yet? YOU are the one flying off the handle and exhibiting discrimination in your comments. For all you know Janrae is gay. Did you ask? Of course not! You just assumed that she was a heterosexual homophobe, which gave you a chance to get on your soapbox.

A lot of gay people frequent here. I guess if they mention anything related to gay fiction and you, THEY would be homophobic, as well.

    Yep, a nitwit.

  6. on June 8, 2008 at 8:26 pm Sir Otter

No, Adam, our definition of a nitwit is someone who latches on to some peripheral mention here and comes storming in all butthurt, acting like a horse’s ass, attacking people he knows nothing about for imagined slights just like a five-year old child would, then comes up with some specious explanation that relieves him of the responsiblity for his own asininity. Grow up, dude.

  7. on June 8, 2008 at 9:01 pm Rusty

Ooh, my Google hits just went up! I guess I’m not such a nitwit after all.

Pacione googles himself all the time. Just because your website gets a few extra hits, or whatever, means nothing regarding nitwittery. The two are unrelated. Thinking that there’s no such thing as bad publicity is one hallmark of a nitwit. There are others. Contempt for readers or the publishing industry is another. Association with the likes of Dagstine and Philbin is a third.

Publishing their dreck is even worse. Dagstine’s stories are riddled with obvious errors; by now, I’ve read enough of them over at Silverthought to know I didn’t just randomly select a bad one — or four. Publish a “story,” of Pacione’s, and you’ll have a perfect trifecta of FAIL.

My readers have seen me get a few facts mixed up, and have pointed out as much. No harm, no foul. I don’t have a problem with people disagreeing with me, correcting my facts, or adding information. Some of our best discussions have come about in this manner.

So, Mr. Lowe, you can take your butthurt, and toddle off with it.

  8. on June 8, 2008 at 9:10 pm Tony

    From Adam’s MySpace page:

News just in: Adam Lowe, author of TROGLODYTE ROSE, has just been accepted for Chimeraworld 5. His story of paedophilia, child sexuality, miscarriage, abortion and escapism is his nastiest, sickest yet–but with an oddly perverse and upbeat ending. Think ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ meets ‘Hard Candy’ with all the gore and guts of ‘Hellraiser’. Look out for ‘A Labyrinth of Entrails’ and the 22 other great stories inside when it hits shelves Nov/Dec 2008.

  9. on June 8, 2008 at 9:14 pm CritGit

Someone says you got an award in the wrong place, a simple ‘actually it was here’ would do.

Instead we get – we’re not gay! – which wasn’t mentioned, and then a big whinge.

Loved the bit ‘but I am gay, which isn’t illegal’ – because you know, we’re a big bunch of homophobes here and that’s the only reason why blah blah blah.
Sorry, just couldn’t be arsed to finish that one. Either you know where I was going or you’re a tit. ;)

  10. on June 8, 2008 at 9:17 pm CritGit

Pan’s Labyrinth and Hard Candy and Hellraiser?

So a girl captures the Fawn and interrogates it, then a box opens and everyone gets ripped apart? :o

If you need to reference a bunch of movie titles for a book, you’re in poor shape.

  11. on June 8, 2008 at 9:22 pm Rusty

Linkage, please? Is it something obvious like profile.myspace.com/adamlowe or profile.myspace.com/polluto?

I happen to be logged into MySpace now, and was catching up on reading Bob Freeman’s entries. Hey, while I’m there . . .

  12. on June 8, 2008 at 9:25 pm Tony

    http://www.myspace.com/baduizt

And here is his other MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/polluto which lists Ms. brite as one of his top friends. How does Adam justify that, knowing what Pacione, Philbin and their ilk have said about Ms. brite in the past?

  13. on June 8, 2008 at 9:26 pm Tony

Oh, and he self publishes: http://www.doghorn.com/ (Click ‘Singer’ on the top menu).

  14. on June 8, 2008 at 9:28 pm Rusty

    Thanks, Tony.

  15. on June 8, 2008 at 9:50 pm AlKilyu

Forgive me I missed something I guess: Nitwits OTHER than Pacione talked smack about Poppy?

I googled and got stopped at some website called languageisavirus.com that has Pacione’s rant against her listed under “Poppy Z Brite Videos and a story Dungstain wrote on silverthought (lololol) where he dropped her name. Both distubed me too much to google on.

  16. on June 8, 2008 at 9:57 pm AlKilyu

And the more I think about this, the more it boggles my mind.

k’ Adam? I don’t think I’ve ever seen any instances of Philbin or Dagstine being homophobic. Not saying it didn’t happen but I have never seen it.

However, both are very chummy with a fellow named Nickolaus Pacione, who uses every single solitary homophobic reference known to man.

So, before getting anymore upset any anyone here, google pacione faggot ( http://www.google.com/search?q=pacione+faggot&rls=com.microsoft:*&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1 ) and when you are done reading the first ten pages, go ask Philbin and Lawrence why they are on friendly terms with that monster, ok?

If you wanna come back here and browbeat after all of that fine.

  17. on June 8, 2008 at 9:58 pm Rusty

Hmm. Age 22? That explains a lot. That F-list for Polluto was interesting. Sure enough, Dagstine and Philbin are on it. I noticed Kaolin and Louise were on it as well. Looks like Poppy doesn’t really use that account.

  18. on June 8, 2008 at 11:27 pm Kody Boye

I think any kind of award is something to be appreciated. If one of my works got a ‘gay’ award (and yes, I do write gay characters,) I wouldn’t care because I’d be tooo OMG OMG OMG I GOT AN AWARD! to care, hehe.

I’m still afraid of Pacione, by the way. ; ) He scares me.

  19. on June 9, 2008 at 12:21 am AlKilyu

Don’t fear him Kody. He’s too scared to venture out of the basement, and lacks the physical strength and cunning to pose a threat.

If he did you’d have to come to his house because he couldn’t afford a bus ticket if you were standing down the street.

  20. on June 9, 2008 at 12:37 am JerrodBalzer

Hi, Kody! Good to see you again. And yeah, don’t worry about Nappy. All bark and no bite.

  21. on June 9, 2008 at 1:30 am Louise

“Pacione googles himself all the time. ”

    Hey, Kody! :D

  22. on June 9, 2008 at 1:34 am Louise

Which account of mine did Adam / Polluto friend? I have a heck of a time keeping up with friend requests these days.

  23. on June 9, 2008 at 3:39 am cussedness

Adam Lowe should have googled me before making those accusations of homophobia. I’m a bi-sexual gender queer who has been out of the closet for twenty years.

I think that Adam has his foot lodged so deep in his mouth that it will need to be surgically removed.

  24. on June 9, 2008 at 4:44 am Michele Lee

For what it’s worth I’ve read “A Labyrinth of Entrails”. It doesn’t portray pedophilia as anything positive. And it’s wasted on Chimeraworld.

  25. on June 9, 2008 at 4:51 am cussedness

And I would like to add reading assignment for mr. lowe-down stupid.

Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg.

And, if he had googled me, he would have found my old journalscape blog cussedness.journalscape and seen, like Pacione did back in 04, “bi-sexual gender queer” in the header.

I would also like to ask if he knows what the B stands for in LBGT.

If he had googled, or even clicked the link on my handle here, he would not have needed to say his/her.

    I’m a bitch, baby-boy. I’m a bitch.

  26. on June 9, 2008 at 5:48 am Adam Lowe

Fair enough. I apologise if I have overreacted. I was responding to what I saw as an attack on my publishing company, which I deemed unjustified.

Whether you like Philbin or Dagstine, we’ve also published Jeff VanderMeer, Rhys Hughes, Steve Redwood and Vince Locke, and are discussing future projects with Michael Moorcock and Justina Robson. I think that speaks for itself.

Michele, thanks for your comments ;) I remember your crit.

Finally, I did publish ‘Singer’ in Issue 1 of ‘Polluto’, but it was more a case of me writing a story to get the flavour of the magazine right. I wrote the story, sent it to artists and writers as an example, and then only finally included it when one of the artists decided she wanted to illustrate it. That decision was justified when we won the aforementioned Spectrum Fantastic Arts Award.

cussedness, I realise now you’re Janrae? I apologise if I offended you or jumped the gun, but as far as I could see from the comments on this blog, there were a bunch of people attacking other writers and they’d also decided to mention my publishing company. How was I to know whether there were sensible people on here or just trolls?

  27. on June 9, 2008 at 5:57 am Rusty

It was this account, Louise. In all fairness, he’s also got Black Death books friended, and it is his Polluto account.

  28. on June 9, 2008 at 6:32 am cussedness

Whether I come up as cussedness or janrae depends upon which account I am currently logged into.

I’m not a sensible person, Mr. Lowe, I’m a curmudgeon. Belonging to an alternative sexual orientation does not make me a sensible person anymore than it does you.

Publishing companies get attacked. Especially small presses, on the basis of the work they publish. When this work includes people who are of sub-standard quality, then they should expect to get an undesired reaction.

We’re not trolls here. Most of us confine our expressions of displeasure to just this site and Odark.

Some people hate TOR and love Baen, and they freely complain about what they find lacking in one or the other. However, you won’t find editors like Jim Frenkel coming to a blog with guns blazing.

  29. on June 9, 2008 at 9:00 am kitsune non grata

I”m just amazed. She has a lesbian identified daughter and is a bisexual herself and shes called anti gay? LULZY!

Really, not doing one’s research is nitwittery. How does your foot taste?

  30. on June 9, 2008 at 9:06 am Sabledrake

“How was I to know whether there were sensible people on here or just trolls?”

Could’ve, I dunno maybe, read the comments, done a little investigation. The whole look-before-leap thing.

  31. on June 9, 2008 at 10:58 am Adam Lowe

That’s true, Sabledrake. But most comments that came after my initial (ill-considered) post were flames. Luckily, I’ve come to realise why (Janrae explained the Dagstine/Philbin issue). Anyway, Janrae and I have discussed this and she has accepted my apologies.

  32. on June 9, 2008 at 11:07 am Michele Lee

    >>I would also like to ask if he knows what the B stands for in LBGT.

*snorts* That’s a good question, Janrae. One that a lot of G/T I’ve run into should be asked. It should also be pointed out that that just because a bisexual person settles into a hetero relationship doesn’t mean she’s suddenly not bi, and therefore “not part of the club” any more.

    But that’s a bit off topic :)

  33. on June 9, 2008 at 11:13 am Adam Lowe

For transsexuals, I guess gender and gender boundaries might be very important. It’s therefore perhaps more understandable why they might be into the whole ‘fixed boundaries’ thing. Gay men often go through a stage where they ‘come out’ as bisexual, to cushion the blow, and then come out as gay. This means many gay men assume all bisexuals are like that. But what you’ll also find is that many bisexuals, who begin to associate in all-male, all-gay crowds, find themselves referring to themselves as gay. Sexuality really is contextual. I’ve always called myself gay, but even after coming out I’ve had bisexual experiences because I wanted to.

But yes, we are digressing . . .

  34. on June 9, 2008 at 12:20 pm Johaha

Hey, Nitwit Lowe, Google hits do not translate into sales. That is something the other Nitwits have yet to realise.

Thousands of hits have not translated into sales for many writers that I know of–which is why many are jaded.

And all publicity is not necessarily good.

  35. on June 9, 2008 at 1:58 pm Louise

Thanks, Rusty. :) I’m just trying to figure out who I have where. Much appreciated. Take care, Louise

  36. on June 9, 2008 at 3:27 pm Adam Lowe

Johaha, I was being fatuous. But, alas! You’re right ;)

  37. on June 9, 2008 at 3:55 pm JupiterPluvius

Adam Lowe, why are you trying to school people who’ve been having gay sex since long before you were born in the Way of the Ghey?

  38. on June 9, 2008 at 5:01 pm Johaha

    Ah, I see.
I’m always late when it comes to picking up on sarcasm and stuff. Sorry, Lowe.

  39. on June 10, 2008 at 8:52 am Adam Lowe

Oh JupiterPluvius, I’ve just done a lot of it in my time ;)

  40. on June 10, 2008 at 9:43 am cussedness

    LOL Adam!
