There’s nothing new on the Nicky front, so I’ll bore you to death with a review of the CD I randomly grabbed from the rack and popped in my computer. It’s Black Stone Cherry’s “Black Stone Cherry.” I bought it when it first came out last year, but haven’t listened to it in months.
Tracks one and two sound like imitation Ozzy & Black Sabbath. Track three (Lonely Train) got some airplay around here, and uncharacteristically sounds like Collective Soul’s early stuff, which is not really a bad thing. Tracks four through seven sound like retro 1977 heavy metal.
“Hell and High Water” (track eight) is the one that got major airplay around here; it’s catchy. That track is why I bought the album. Tracks nine through twelve are just more nondescript formulaic head-banger heavy metal.
The best track on the entire album is #13 — “Rollin’ On.” It never got any airplay around here. It’s reminiscent of classic southern rock, with a ’90s twist. Excellent!
If you go to their official website, as I just did, they fucking BLAST their music at 60+ decibels, with no option to mute or turn it down. That just cost them one album sale from their forthcoming release.
If I have to hit the back button or close the browser to shut off the noise that would wake the neighbors two blocks away, if it were warm enough to have my windows open, then I’m not buying another album of theirs. I like this one, but not enough to buy their next one. Three good songs plus one obnoxious website equals no further sales.
Next up: something reliable like Blondie or Shawn Phillips.

They also remade the Jeff Beck Group’s version of the Yardbirds’ “Shapes of Things”, which I thought was pretty cool…mostly because I didn’t think too many new bands would admit that they grew up listening to Truth and Beck-Ola.
Black Stone Cherry originated from a county in Kentucky not too far from where I live for now, so they’re kind of treated as a “homegrown” act by the local hard rock station. I like their album a lot.
I really like this album a lot, too, Ben, and didn’t mean to imply otherwise. It’s just that their website volume was such a turnoff to me (“Jesus Christ–turn it OFF!”), that I won’t be first in line to buy their next album.
So that’s why they sounded southern rock-ish with Lonely Train and Rockin’ On. Kentucky. That explains a lot.
By contrast, my “homegrown” artist is Pete Yorn. He’s always fantastic live in a small venue, or on CD. Dead meets Phish meets Jersey. I’m no Deadhead, but I do appreciate humor in lyrics. Pete Yorn is a master at that, plus he plays a pretty good guitar.
Gak. I’m showing my fondness for southern rock. Bad Codge, BAD! *slaps self* Oh well. It’s guilty pleasure of mine.
nothing new on the pacione front? damn, that sucks
the new philbin interview isn’t even ready to drop yet…
life sucks.
Crikey, Larry. I know you have a huge ego and drama queen complex. Can’t you stifle it long enough to change a few diapers? I don’t have anything against you, other than your attitude.
Are you still a Philbin buddy?
Ego, perhaps… But, if there are no people here at all (reading or responding to this blog) without a dash (emphasis on dash) of the same, or in a similar vein or in the elitist department, then I’m Kermit the Frog. Come now, you’re a journalist…
While on the subject of drama queens or just plain old drama, is Nickolaus Pacione not drama?
And don’t worry, daddy changes diapers and bottle feeds between blogs 12 to 16 hours out of a 24 hour day. 7 days a week.
Quote – “Are you still a Philbin buddy?”
We’ll have to see. Keep your dog from the UK on a leash. I hate things which foam at the mouth.
Larry
Apologies to Rusty for thinking there was some involvement with the UK individual mentioned briefly above, but if people would like to understand a little bit more about what the entry above refers to, or what’s going on, there is an entertaining argument going on between myself and some dickhead in DAGSTINE=ENIGMA, which would be the August 12th Rusty Nail entry.
Just backtrack a little. Thank You.
If you’re that bored, Rusty, you could finish reading the book. Or did you and just didn’t want to say anything. Damn, I should learn when to shut the hell up, shouldn’t I?
Speaking of music (sort of), I finally got round to cueing up that Nicky remix this morning. Very amusing.

Oh dear. Yes, I did finish your book, Mark. I quite enjoyed it. You have my apologies for not doing a full review of it. I actually do have one small criticism. As you’re well aware, I’m nothing but a thoughtful reader. A review is forthcoming; I just think it’s better composed offline and uploaded, rather than trying to do it here in a quickie comment.
It was good, wasn’t it, Crawford? The time Chaos_Wraith spent doing that was well worth it.
